Joint Longevity: Why You Should Care About Your Ankles and Shoulders

Build a body that is ready for hiking, walking, lifting, and everyday life by training mobility and stability at key joints.

Most people train muscles, but this article asks you to think about the joints that support them. As the weather becomes more active, ankle mobility and shoulder function can influence how comfortably you move.

1. The Ankle: Your Foundation

Your ankles are a first point of contact during walking, running, hiking, and many lower-body movements.

The check: Can you squat deeply without your heels lifting?

The fix: Ankle circles and calf stretches. The article suggests spending a couple of minutes drawing the alphabet with your toes.

2. The Shoulder: Your Mobile Command Center

Phones, laptops, and driving can pull the shoulders forward and limit comfortable overhead movement.

The check: Stand with your back against a wall and try to reach your arms overhead without arching your back.

The fix: Dead hangs from a pull-up bar for 30–60 seconds, as appropriate for your ability.

3. Train for “Ready,” Not Just “Perfect”

Add unilateral work such as lunges and single-arm presses so your body learns to stabilize under load.

The 2026 goal: Build a body durable enough to enjoy the world, not just one that looks good in a T-shirt.
