Progressive Overload 101

Keep training productive by gradually increasing weight, reps, sets, range of motion, or training difficulty over time.

If your workouts feel too easy or you have hit a plateau, it may be time to apply progressive overload, the principle of gradually increasing the stress placed on your muscles over time.

Ways to Progress

  • Increase weight: Add a few pounds to your lifts.
  • Add reps or sets: Perform more repetitions or an additional set.
  • Reduce rest time: Shorten breaks to challenge endurance.
  • Improve form or range of motion: Move with more control, greater depth, or a slower tempo.

Why It Works

Muscles adapt when they are consistently challenged. Increasing training demands gradually can support continued strength and muscle development while helping you maintain sound technique.

Apply It Gradually

Increase in small increments, protect your form, track your lifts and reps, mix progression strategies, and give recovery the same attention as training.

Example

Week 1: 3 sets of 10 squats at 50 lb. Week 2: 3 sets of 12 squats at 50 lb. Week 3: 3 sets of 10 squats at 55 lb.
